[REVIEW] Colourpop Lux Lipstick

I got really excited when I saw that Colourpop was releasing its first line of bullet lipsticks on Instagram – as much as I like how lasting liquid lipsticks are, I’m still a bigger of bullet lipsticks and the occasional lip tint. However, I didn’t manage to get hold of any the first time I tried to buy them, because they were all sold out 🙁 So I waited out for a while, and FINALLY managed to order one of these babies.

Product Description

LUX it up. Enriched with our LUX Blend of hydrating butters, this creamy-matte, long wearing lipstick glides on the lips for intense pigmentation in shades made for every skin tone.

This medium rosy beige will get you from one destination to the next.

Official Retail Price: USD 7.00 (Colourpop Official Website)

Ingredient List

Octyldodecanol, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Polyethylene, Hydrated Silica, Flavor, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Tocopherol, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Elaeis Guineensis (Palm) Butter, Euterpe Olerecea Pulp Powder, Punica Granatum Seed Oil, Iron Oxides (CI 77491, 77492, 77499), Red 7 Lake (CI 15850), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891).

Colourpop’s star ingredients here are Jojoba Seed Oil, Shea Butter, and Pomegranate Seed Oil, which claim to help your lips stay moisturized. I do find it a bit strange, however, that ingredients like ‘flavour’ are actually present in a considerable proportion.

One thing I really like about Colourpop is its huge offerings of nude shades. Not everyone is a red lip kinda person, and sometimes bright pink can look inappropriate at formal occasions, so nude is definitely one of the safest shades you can go with.

Packaging: I quite like the gold packaging and cute tiny stars adorning both the cover and the actual lipstick itself – it’s small details like these that differentiates one brand’s lipsticks from another’s. I do feel that Colourpop can improve of its labelling of shades on the product. – currently, what they do is to use some transparent name sticker and paste it on the bottom of the tube. Sure it works, but I still feel that it makes the product look a lot cheaper than it would have been if the name was printed on or something.

Colour: Nude shades are everyone’s thing (yes, everyone!). I quite like this shade that I got (Lay Over) – it’s a rose beige that is great for people with warm undertones, and I think of it as a ‘pink’ equivalent of ‘brick red’. I do think the photos are on the website are quite misleading though, because the shade looked a lot darker in real life than on the models pictured.

The payoff is good, and the colour slides off easily so you don’t have to tug hard on your lips for more. It does remind me strongly of shea butter when it comes to the texture – imagine hand cream, but on your lips. You can even taste hints of it by the way. I found it a little strange, I’m not sure if it is everyone’s kind of thing.

Staying power: Colourpop promises that this will be long wearing, and they are right. Don’t expect it to be fully transfer-proof, because it’s not. It’s just that you’re likely to survive an intense meal with this lipstick on, and still have enough left after the meal so that there is no need to touch up.

Final Verdict

Long-wearing bullet lipsticks, are in fact, not as easy to find as your usual liquid alternatives. I think it may of course have something to do with the formula, but nonetheless, this has proven to be quite good.

Strange shea butter taste aside, I use this lipstick quite regularly these days when I am too lazy to pull together a more pronounced look, or aiming to go for a more ‘natural’ feel. I think this is great for people who are going for a clean look, or simply love how easy it is to wear neutral shades. I would definitely love to try other nude shades of this lipstick – because one nude shade is definitely different from the other, am I right?
