By now you probably would have heard of this ‘holy grail’ product that everyone says you must try from LANEIGE. I had read a lot of glowing (pun intended) reviews online about this, and couldn’t help but get myself one of these to test it out myself.

Product Description

Overnight mask that gives the skin a lively, well-rested appearance the next morning thanks to its Sleep-tox™ purifying effect.

Official Retail Price in Singapore: SGD 42

Ingredient List

Water, Butylene Glycol, Cyclopentasiloxane, Glycerin, Cyclohexasiloxane, Trehalose, Sodium Hyaluronate, Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Root Extract, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Fruit Extract, Beta-Glucan, Chenopodium Quinoa Seed Extract, Ascorbyl Glucoside, Magnesium Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Calcium Chloride, Potassium Alginate, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Polysorbate 20, Dimethicone, Dimethiconol, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Propanediol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Stearyl Behenate, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, HYDROXYPROPYL BISPALMITAMIDE MEA, Inulin Lauryl Carbamate, Alcohol, 1, 2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Carbomer, Tromethamine, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance, CI 42090

The first thing you should notice here is the alcohol ingredient, a clear warning sign for any of you out there with sensitive skin. Unfortunately, I didn’t pay much attention to this when I first purchased it, which will explain my review later.

Another ingredient here that is not so obvious is Butylene Glycol. A quick check online states that “in sensitive individuals, butylene glycol may be irritating to the skin, eyes, and or nasal passages, but it is the least potentially irritating of all the glycols”. Oh dear.

Packaging: LANEIGE’s packaging is very consistent, and I think that it is very effective in achieving two goals: 1) reinforcing the idea of hydration, 2) making the product feel luxurious. I think this is probably one of the brand’s greatest strengths tbh, I can’t find an product of theirs which I don’t like the packaging of.

Texture: The texture (and the colour) reminded me of belif’s aqua bomb (which I really love). Both have this blue tinge, spreads easily on the skin, feels moisturizing, and not in the least bit oily. I personally really like moisturizers that have this texture because I feel less paranoid about them being too oily for my already-oily skin.

Effectiveness: I’ve tried this over a few months and I’m frankly not very impressed.

Let’s start with the moisturizing effects. Although it’s not meant to be used as a moisturizer (that’s why recommended usage is 1 to 2 times a week), I love how my skin instantly feels hydrated and cooled when the mask is applied. It does help me to sleep a little better because my skin feels hydrated and refreshed.

However, I have serious doubts about whether this really makes your skin look refreshed and purified the next morning. For starters, I’ve often faced acne breakouts on my face the very next morning – not exactly the kind of effect I was going for. I can see that my clogs are blocked, and that’s why I have a breakout after using this. I’ve tried this quite a few times already, and it’s happened to me at least 80% of the time. I’m suspecting it’s the irritants like alcohol, fragrance, and possibly Butylene Glycol.

I don’t know if I’m the only one facing this problem, because all the reviews I’ve read have never mentioned a single thing about breakouts. In fact, I’ve ever read something about this product being great for oily skin – really?? Is it just me who’s facing problems with this??

Final Verdict

I tried very hard to make this product work for me, but unfortunately it seems that it’s not working out well.

I honestly don’t feel that it is very oily and never really suspected that it could clog my pores – if anything, it feels very refreshing and it made me feel like my skin could really benefit from using it. I didn’t feel any irritation, any clogging, nor any other discomfort. I’m really upset that my skin doesn’t take this well, especially when it seems to be doing wonders for many other users. I would not recommend this to people who have oily, sensitive, and acne-prone skin.

Has anyone else experienced this kind of problems/unsatisfactory results from using LANEIGE’s Sleeping Mask? Do share your experience in the comments, I would love to hear from you!

I recently switched over to this from the water bank series & I must say I’m disappointed with it as well 🙁 my dry skin became quite irritated and it just got drier with each application.

I also tried really hard to love Laneige products but I never got the desired outcome from all the products I purchased and used over the years. As for this product, for me it was effective for a week or so and then I stopped seeing results as well. And after reading your review, i’m guessing it was one of the causes of my clogged pores…
