I know the matte lipstick trend is slowing dying out, what with everyone looking for lip glosses again, but I personally still prefer having something longer lasting because I’m always munching on something and I hate having to touch up often.
I have yet to try a lip product from MISSHA, so I thought I would give this matte lipstick of theirs a go when I was buying some other products on Shopee.

My first thought when I saw this product was that it looked a lot like my Etude House Dear My Matte Tinting Lip-Talk, so I went to have a look at its formula:
OCTYLDODECANOL, POLYMETHYLSILSESQUIOXANE, DICAPRYLYL CARBONATE, OCTYLDODECYL NEOPENTANOATE, TITANIUM DIOXIDE (CI 77891), POLYGLYCERYL-2 DIISOSTEARATE, SILICA, MICA, SYNTHETIC WAX, PENTAERYTHRITYL TETRAISOSTEARATE, IRON OXIDES (CI 77491), MICROCRYSTALLINE WAX, POLYETHYLENE, POLYGLYCERYL-2 TRIISOSTEARATE, DIISOSTEARYL MALATE, EUPHORBIA CERIFERA (CANDELILLA) WAX, POLYHYDROXYSTEARIC ACID, RED 6 (CI 15850), DISTEARDIMONIUM HECTORITE, FRAGRANCE, RED 7 (CI 15850), METHICONE, BLUE 1 LAKE (CI 42090), COPERNICIA CERIFERA (CARNAUBA) WAX, PUNICA GRANATUM FRUIT EXTRACT, WATER, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, RUBUS IDAEUS (RASPBERRY) FRUIT EXTRACT
What I find interesting is that they definitely share a lot of ingredients in common, but Etude House’s lipstick contains an added butylene glycol, which is an alcohol that can cause skin irritation (if you remember my other posts about it in LANEIGE products).
One fascinating thing about this lipstick is that it actually offers SPF17. While we try to protect our skin from sun damage, we tend to forget that there is skin on our lips that should be protected as well, so this was quite a nice bonus.

Packaging: Eerily enough, the packaging looks almost identical to that of Shu Uemura’s Rouge Unlimited lippies. To be fair, the differences are quite obvious, but the design inspiration is definitely there as well. Whichever came first, I do like the simple and classy packaging that comes with no frills.
Colour: I thought the actual product colour matched the name ‘Maple Latte’ a lot better than the product shot provided by MISSHA, to be honest. It turned out to be a lot more orangey-brown that I had expected, because it just looked like pink in the official swatches. Actually, I won’t say that I dislike the colour it turned out to be because it’s actually a kind of brick-red that I got to love recently – great for people with warm undertones and are rather fair, just that when I bought this I was looking for something that could pull off a more ‘sweet’ and ‘feminine’ look. I think shades Love Dream and Dear Rose were more like what I was gunning for.
The payoff is great, and the colour slides off easily so you don’t have to tug hard on your lips for more colour. I do find that application can be a bit messy on your lips if you’re not careful because it can overrun your lip line.
Staying power: I have high expectations of mattes and I thought that this was quite okay, but nothing super mind-blowing. There aren’t any lipstick stains on my cup when I drink, but a fair bit gets off when I eat. You will still have some colour remaining by the end of a long day so you won’t have super pale lips, but a touch-up is still needed to look fresh.
Final Verdict
This is an okay lipstick – nothing in particular that I really liked, but nothing that I didn’t like about it also. I would describe it as the kind of staple in your lipstick collection that is good for an easy and predictable makeup routine.
My only minor regret about this product is that I got it in a colour that didn’t quite match my expectations. Ah well. Maybe I’ll get around to buying the pinks next time.
