[REVIEW] Innisfree Jeju Volcanic Clay Mousse Mask EX

Innisfree Jeju Volcanic Clay Mousse Mask EX review

Although I am highly addicted to sheet masks, I have a love-hate relationship with clay masks.

Granted, they’re supposed to be very good for my combination, acne-prone skin, but I find that many of them tend to be very drying or just not as effective as I had hoped.

Innisfree Jeju Volcanic Color Clay Mask was okay, but not good enough to be a constant in my skincare routine. I heard that Innisfree‘s newer Jeju Volcanic Clay Mousse Mask EX was one of the most popular products in the Volcanic Clay range.

Hence, I wanted to give it a shot and see if it would live up to the rave reviews.

Kaolin is a wonderful skincare ingredient that reduces excess oiliness, deep cleaning and removing impurities. It is ideal for those who suffer from acne-prone skin.

However, take note that this contains alcohol, which may irritate sensitive skin. Do a patch test on a small part first for ~ 10 minutes to check if your skin reacts to it. If all is well, you can continue to use this on the rest of your face.

Packaging

Compared to the tubs where I have to scoop out the clay mask, Innisfree’s Jeju Volcanic Clay Mousse Mask EX’s packaging is the best I have seen for clay masks. Honestly, it was one of the reasons why I was keen to try this out.

You don’t even have to shake or anything. Just press the nozzle and you get an appropriate amount of product dispensed. It’s a lot less messy and definitely more hygienic.

I know it’s a bit ironic that my bottle is dirty but trust me, it’s already a lot cleaner than some other clay masks that I’ve used.

Texture

You’d be forgiven for mistaking the Jeju Volcanic Clay Mousse Mask EX as food when you feel how smooth and luxurious this mousse is. It almost looks like whipped tiramisu/coffee cream! Except that it has a slight smell of volcanic ash to remind you that this goes on your face, not your mouth lol.

The clay comes out pretty thick as well so you can apply this smoothly across your face. It doesn’t feel tingly, but you can sense that it’s really working to clean out your pores when your skin feels a little more taut after about 20 minutes.

Effectiveness

I don’t have particularly dry skin so I can’t tell you whether it dries dry skin ou. However, this has worked fabulously on my combination skin, even on the drier parts.

Don’t expect to see instantly cleaner pores or that your pimples dry up instantly with this clay mask! Instead, you’ll realise that your skin feels much less oily, a little softer than before, and over time much less prone to clogged pores & acne.

I’ve used this for a few months now and I do think it’s very good at getting rid of excess oil & other gunk that haven’t been cleared during cleansing.

It’s also very comfortable on my skin. I don’t feel like it’s going to dry up and crack my skin at all. In fact, it usually is still quite mousse-y even after leaving it to dry for 20 minutes, so you can tell that it’s pretty moisturising.

Final Verdict

I like to use the Jeju Volcanic Clay Mousse Mask EX whenever I feel that I have an acne breakout coming, or when my skin feels particularly oily. Rather than clear up active acne, this is great for keeping my acne at bay before it even comes.

After having tried a lot of drying clay masks, I’m pleasantly surprised at how nice this clay mask feels. Most clay masks will advise you to wash it off after about 10 minutes so that your skin doesn’t dry out. The fact that Jeju Volcanic Clay Mousse Mask EX can be left on for up to 20 minutes tells you about as much.

It’s a little expensive at about SGD 30, but a little really goes a long way with this one. I use this about once or twice a week because I don’t want to over-exfoliate. (I’m also using The Ordinary’s Glycolic Acid Toner). But you can consider using this thrice a week if you have oilier skin.

If you have very dry skin and worry about this drying your skin out, use a hydrating toner after washing the clay mask off. The toner not only clears away any remaining clay, but also helps to re-hydrate your skin!

I’m intrigued by the clay mousse formula and the spray can packaging- I have never seen a mask like this before. Clay masks always work the best on my breakout prone, combination skin. This sounds like a mask that can make a real difference for me, especially when I have a breakout coming on.

The packaging for this mask is so interesting – I’ve never tried a mask that was dispensed like this before. Kaolin is an awesome ingredient for sure!

I’m currently using the Super Volcanic pore clay mask from innisfree and I’m loving it! Maybe I’ll try this one next. We’re opposites, I actually love-hate sheet masks and prefer using clay masks ?

I have combi skin and it’s also on the dry side. I only use it once every 1-2 weeks though! and I always follow the clay mask with a nourishing and moisturising sheet mask/serum!
